17 December 2013 Chaos Group announced a new V-Ray 3.0 for 3ds Max beta build is available for download at the Chaos Group Downloads page.

According to Chaos Group press release “With this beta program, our users can get their hands on new and improved features and capabilities of the best version of V-Ray yet. Thanks to our continuous work with 3D artists all over the world, V-Ray 3.0 for 3ds Max has now become the most complete lighting, shading and rendering toolkit on the market.”

There is a list of new features of V-Ray 3.0 BETA / Build 3.05.04:

  • VRaySkinMtl material;
  • VRayProxy: Initial support for particles in Alembic files;
  • VFB: New color corrections: contrast, HSL, color balance;
  • VRayOrnatrixMod and VRayHairFarmMod: Added options for dynamic view-dependent hair tesselation;
  • VRayOptionRe: Added an option to save three-channel alpha in deep OpenEXR 2 files for compatibility with Houdini;
  • VRayUserColor and VRayUserScalar textures for reading data directly from a Node's User Properties;
  • V-Ray RT: Support for RailClone instancing.

There are also a lot of modified features and bug fixes, if compare to previous V-Ray 3.0 for 3ds Max version.

System Requirements for V-Ray 3.0 for 3ds Max beta:

  • A computer with 3ds Max 2011/3ds Max Design 2011 or later, 64 bit versions only;
  • Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, 64 bit versions only;
  • Intel Pentium IV or compatible processor with SSE2 support;
  • 4 GB RAM and 4 GB swap minimum - recommended 8 GB or more RAM, 8 GB or more swap file;
  • NUMA architecture is supported but not recommended.

The Beta program will run for a period of approximately 3 months. For now Chaos Group offers for users who purchased a new V-Ray 2.0 for 3ds Max commercial license between August 4, 2013 and the date of the V-Ray 3.0 for 3ds Max official release will be eligible for a free upgrade. They will receive 1 V-Ray 3.0 Workstation license and 2 Render Node licenses.
